The short version
Winery Passport is a personal Android journal from Hoosier Geek. It does not require an account. The current build has no advertising, analytics, crash reporting, subscriptions, social feed, or cloud synchronization. Hoosier Geek does not operate a server that receives your passport records.
Your journal works offline. Optional Find my winery lookup needs a connection and sends coordinates to the public OpenStreetMap Overpass service. The provider also receives your IP address and ordinary request metadata.
Data on your device
The app stores the following in app-private storage on your Android device:
- Winery names and visit dates.
- Optional personal notes and wine, service, and ambiance ratings.
- Photos you choose through Android’s photo picker.
- The database and settings needed to display and manage your passport.
The passport database stores the name you select rather than latitude or longitude. Hoosier Geek does not receive your saved journal, ratings, or photos.
Optional foreground location lookup
When you tap Find my winery, the app requests location permission if needed. With permission, Android’s built-in location APIs obtain a current foreground location. The app sends coordinates to the Overpass API at overpass-api.de over HTTPS to look for nearby wineries in OpenStreetMap data.
The closest returned winery within approximately half a mile can fill the name field, with other returned names offered as alternatives. You can correct the name before saving. Approximate location permission is accepted; reduced accuracy can affect matches.
The request is initiated by you. The app does not look up your location continuously or in the background, and it keeps no location history. Winery Passport does not log precise coordinates or save coordinates in the passport. Nearby requests do not include your journal, photos, notes, or ratings.
The service operator receives the coordinates included in the request, your IP address, and normal HTTP request metadata. The operator’s handling of that information is separate from Hoosier Geek’s practices. A network request means some information leaves the device; the offline journal itself does not need that request.
You can deny or revoke permission and type the winery name manually. Manual entry remains available if location is unavailable, permission is denied, a winery is unmapped, or the service fails. Free community map coverage and service availability vary.
Photos and manual ZIP backups
Android’s photo picker provides only the photos you select. The app copies them into its private storage and does not upload them with winery searches.
Save a backup creates a ZIP backup containing stamps, notes, ratings, and app-owned photos. You choose the destination through Android’s file picker. ZIP backups are not encrypted. A cloud drive or other destination you choose handles the file under its own terms.
Restore a backup reads a ZIP you select. Add visits imports all visits, including duplicates, while Replace replaces the current passport. There is no automatic deduplication or synchronization.
Automatic Android backup and device-to-device transfer are disabled. Save a ZIP before uninstalling the app or changing phones.
Services and external apps
- Android: The operating system provides location APIs and photo/file pickers. The current build does not use the Google Play Services location SDK.
- OpenStreetMap Overpass API: The current nearby lookup provider is overpass-api.de. See its operator documentation. Community map data is from OpenStreetMap contributors. The current build does not call Nominatim.
- Google Play: App distribution is handled under Google’s privacy policy.
- External browser and email apps: Settings opens privacy and support pages in your browser. Email support opens a draft addressed to support@hoosiergeek.dev with the subject “Winery Passport support,” without attachments or automatic sending. Those external apps have their own practices. Your choices and deletion
- Deny or revoke location permission and enter names manually.
- Edit or delete individual visits. Deleting a visit removes its record and app-owned photos not used by another visit.
- Clear Android app storage or uninstall to remove your local passport.
- Delete exported ZIP backups separately wherever you saved them.

Children
Winery Passport is not directed to children. Hoosier Geek does not knowingly collect children’s personal information through the app.
Policy changes
We may update this policy when the app’s features or providers change. The effective date at the top identifies this version. App behavior depends on the installed build.
